Welcome to Skipjack Key, where the dress code is flip-flop formal and the only punctual thing on the island is the volcano. Tonight the Molten Mermaid throws its fiftieth Castaway Luau, and the founder, the original castaway, has promised an announcement bigger than Old Faithless itself. Then nine o'clock comes, the volcano erupts on cue, and the founder never makes it to the lever. The manager, the bartender who covets the recipe, the developer with the laminated offer, the heir off the last ferry: everyone under the torch line had fifty years of reasons. The ferry's gone. Pour something with an umbrella in it; nobody's leaving till we know who.

Welcome to Skipjack Key, nine acres of sand at the end of the ferry line, where the whole island runs on fifty years of favors and the founder holds every ledger. Tonight the Castaway Luau seats the entire favor economy at the same long tables. Speak the local time: nothing here starts on schedule except the volcano, a “castaway” is anyone who came for a week and stayed a decade, “the nine o'clock” is the eruption you can set a watch by, and “losing your hook” means losing your mug and your welcome both. Etiquette: never drink from another castaway's mug, the roast pit is the pitmaster's sovereign ground, and the Eruption bowl is shared but your straw is your own.
